It is nevertheless important to ensure that you have two working keys for your car. It is costly to replace a key in the event that you lose it.

How to Replace the Ignition Key on the Saab 9-3

If your car's key doesn't engage in the ignition and you want to replace it, you'll need to replace it. This guide will walk you through how to do it on the Saab 9-3. You'll require a replacement key, a new reprogrammable battery and a brand new key-fob case.

As opposed to earlier models, modern Saab vehicles use a transponder on the key-fob instead physical key made of metal to unlock and start the vehicle. The reprogrammable batteries that are in the key-fob eventually become worn out and can't hold any charge. This is especially the case if you use the same key for the same lock.



A professional locksmith can replace the battery quickly. If you've got the right tools, and a little patience, you can do it yourself. The first step is to take the key-fob out. This is done by inserting a flathead screwdriver into the slot located in middle of the case. It is important to be careful, as the plastic is extremely thin and easily damaged.

Once the case is opened and you are able to prepare the new key by combining the lower portion of the old key and the banana and transponder on the new key. This will ensure that the new key is connected to the CIM properly, which can make a huge difference when replacing the original key for your Saab 9-3.

How to replace the ignition Key in a Saab 900

If you do not have two keys, you will have to take off the dashboard and steering wheel to gain access to the ignition. Start by disconnecting your negative battery cable. After the battery has been disconnected, you can remove the dashboard and trim pieces around the steering wheel. Once the dash has been removed, you can put a screwdriver in the opening behind the ignition switch.

The ignition cylinder is equipped with a key lock, which could prevent the vehicle from starting if it doesn't contain the key. If the ignition switch on your 900 isn't working properly, check the key to determine if it's in the lock or in the barrel of ignition. It is also important to rotate your keys and keep them clean to avoid being bent.

How to replace the ignition Key in the Saab9-5

It could be time to replace your SAAB key fob if it is having difficulty turning the barrel of the lock. The process is simple and you don't need to go to a dealership. You can do it at home with just a few basic tools.

First, you'll need prepare the new key. Before you start, disable the anti-theft feature by placing blocks under your rear wheels and engaging your handbrake. Insert the key in the ignition and then turn the key to the "on" position. This will activate the accessories, but it will not start the engine. Repeat this procedure 5 times, and then keep the key on the "on" position.

Next, you'll need to get a replacement case for the old key fob. They can be found at a variety of auto parts stores and are generally very affordable. Based on the model, you can even purchase them without electronics.

To open the case you need to gently push the screwdriver with a flathead into the slot in the middle. The case will break easily, and once you've done that, you'll have access to the internal electronics. To remove the electronics employ a small screwdriver and try to pry them out in a gentle manner.
